Sameena Manzur Awarded Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Award 2025

Sameena Manzur, a research student at the Waste Data and Analysis Center (WDAC) and the third-year PhD student in the Department of Technology and Society, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Fund Annual Award. Under the guidance of Dr. David Tonjes, the former director and the founder of WDAC, Sameena has been participating in the majority of waste characterization studies in New York State. Her PhD work focuses on exploring the impact of socioeconomic factors on food and organic waste.

In 1997, the State University at Stony Brook recognized Evan Liblit’s contributions to solid waste management and recycling and established a memorial scholarship in his name. His legacy is carried forward through Evan R. Liblit Scholarship at Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), which supports students dedicated to addressing pressing environmental issues, including waste management. This scholarship is awarded annually to both undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate excellence in environmental science research, often focusing on pollution, marine conservation, and waste reduction efforts.

This scholarship will enable Sameena to continue her journey toward advancing waste management practices and fostering sustainability.

Congratulations, Sameena!
