Dr. David Tonjes, founder and former director of Stony Brook University’s Waste Data & Analysis Center (WDAC) was awarded the prestigious “Dr. R. Lawrence Swanson Environmental Stewardship Award of Long Island” on November 13, 2024. Presented by the Evan R. Liblit Memorial Scholarship Fund, the award recognizes Dr. Tonjes’s significant contributions to the field of waste management.

Throughout his career, Dr. Tonjes has been a leading voice in the academic analysis of wastes. Dr. Tonjes is remembered by colleagues and students alike for his exceptional teaching skills, dedication, and collaborative spirit, which extend beyond his scholarly work.

Though now retired, Dr. Tonjes remains connected to WDAC, offering his expertise and continuing to inspire those passionate about environmental sustainability.
