The Waste Data and Analysis Center is led by researchers from Stony Brook University in the Department of Technology and Society within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The goals of the Center are to conduct research to better understand the generation, composition and management of solid wastes, particularly within New York State.
The Center’s primary geographic focus is New York State and local municipalities, but the Center also examines national and international data. The Waste Data and Analysis Center is led by faculty researchers from the Department of Technology and Society and the Center also supports multiple graduate and undergraduate student researchers. The Center is currently working on multiple projects examining various aspects of waste management.
Project Director • Principal Investigator
Dr. David Tonjes research interests are Solid Waste Management, Impacts to Ground Water from Local Waste Management Facilities, Long Island Ground Water Dynamics, and Sanitary Waste Management Impacts on Local Estuaries.
He currently serves as a Graduate Program Director and Research Associate Professor at Stony Brook University in the Department of Technology and Society.
He serves as the director of the Waste Data and Analysis Center and is a member of other Stony Brook University research groups such as the Institute of Gas Innovation and Technology, the Long Island Groundwater Research Institute, and the Waste Reduction and Management Institute
Dr. David Tonjes has numerous publications and plays a key role in multiple active and recent funding opportunities.
Associate Project Director • Principal Investigator
Dr. Elizabeth Hewitt is an urban planner and social scientist, and her work explores human processes that impact energy and resilience in buildings and cities. She focuses on urban multifamily or commercial buildings, and conducts research on the many scales, influences, and actors within and outside of buildings that impact energy and resilience, such as occupant behavior in buildings; decision making for resilience (at the building scale and the city scale); occupant interactions with smart building technologies; and organizational culture for energy and resilience.
Dr. Hewit currently serces as an Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University in the Department of Technology and Society.
Project Researcher
Dr. Krista Thyberg serves as a Project Researcher.
Dr. Thyberg is a Research Assistant Professor for the Waste Data and Analysis Center at Stony Brook University. Her research focuses on environmental and waste management, particularly waste characterization and quantification, as well as decision making for environmental management and policy.
Dr. Thyberg received her Ph.D. from Stony Brook University. Her doctoral research focused on evaluating the environmental and social impacts of technologies and policies for sustainable waste management. Much of her work has concentrated on food waste, particularly quantifying food waste, evaluating factors driving food waste generation, as well as determining the environmental impacts of food waste treatment technologies using life cycle assessment modeling. She has published numerous articles on environmental and waste management issues.
In addition to her work at the Waste Data and Analysis Center, Dr. Thyberg teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of Technology and Society. She also works as an Environmental Consultant specializing in natural resource management and ecological assessments.
